
Academic Year Planning
This overview calendar is designed to help Chapter Advisors and officers keep track of opportunities for NEHS members. We have included a sample of a chapter calendar (Linganore High School, MD).
The following year-long outline may help organizae chapter activities and help chapter members set goals. Remember that the more the chapter is willing to serve, the better its image will be, and the more willing others will be to contribute to and to participate in its programs.
May/June 2022
- Hold induction for new members if your chapter has a spring induction tradition
- If induction occurs, enter new member names into NEHS Connect and submit membership dues
- Hold elections for new officers so planning for the next school year may begin
- Remind rising seniors of the Common Reader for the following year, encouraging summer reading
- If holding fall membership drives and induction, set dates now
- Review or create bylaws (with new officers as possible)
- Make note of summer publication dates for NEHSXpress
August 2022
- If fall membership drives and induction are planned, confirm dates, and develop program
- Invite membership applications, making sure criteria for selection are widely distributed, including to parents/guardians
- Set a yearly calendar of chapter meeting dates
- Develop, with officers and members, chapter activity ideas
- Review NEHS yearly calendar, noting application deadlines
- Confirm with school financial office the anniversary due date for Affiliation Fee
September 2022
- Encourage sophomores and juniors to enter the Intellectual Freedom Competition; essays are due October 3
- Attend the first-of-the-year NEHS Webinar, in late September that is devoted to supporting chapters, particularly those with new Advisors; encourage officers to attend
- Hold induction ceremony as planned
- Begin chapter meetings Chapter Spotlight submissions begin September 6
- Submit applications for Project Grants or Classroom Library Grants (if eligible) for second semester by October 3
- Advisors may apply for Advisor Grants throughout the year
October 2022
- Remind seniors of the Common Reader if they are intending to apply for the NEHS Scholarships
- Encourage all members to submit writing to the Writing Contest; the first submision period opens October 17, with submissions due November 7
- Conduct chapter projects and submit to Chapter Spotlight by November 7
November 2022
- Common Reader prompts are announced November 1
- Encourage all members to submit writing to the #1 Writing Contest due November 7
- Second Chapter Spotlight submissions due November 7
December 2022
- Scholarship and essay application window opens December 12 and closes January 9
- Chapter Spotlight submission opens December 12
- #2 Writing Contest submissions opens December 12
January 2023
- Scholarship applications and essays due January 9
- Chapter Spotlight submission due January 9
- #2 Writing Contest submissions due January 9
March 2023
- If spring induction is the tradition, begin planning induction dates and membership campaigns
April 2023
- Scholarship Awards announced by April 10
- Applications for first semester 2023 Project Grants open April 10 and close April 24
- Junior Summer Study Awards application opens April 10 and closes April 24
- #3 Writing Contest submissions open April 10 and close April 24
- #3 Chapter Spotlight submissions open April 10 and close April 24
- Nominations for Outstanding Advisor and Outstanding Chapter due April 24
