As May draws to a close and June unfolds, the normal rhythms of the school year change rather dramatically. In many parts of the country, seniors are finished and many have already graduated. Traffic around school zones lightens, state-level athletic competitions conclude, and educators begin the process of winding down and putting away, while simultaneously looking ahead to the new opportunities that will come next year. A sense of nostalgia settles on many; Yehuda Amichai, in his poem "The School Where I Studied," shares, "I stood near the school building and looked in. This is the room / where we sat and learned. The windows of a classroom always open / to the future, but in our innocence we thought it was only landscape / we were seeing from the window." As the final bell of the year rings, we hope you look toward the summer with great anticipation and at the "landscape views" from the classroom windows indeed "open to the future."
Your supportive colleagues in the Central Office of NEHS trust your plans for summer will refresh and renew your spirit even as you already begin to think about the next academic year. We hope NEHS has been, and will continue to be, an integral part of the successes of your school; your involvement in this honor society continues to benefit your students and we thank you for your leadership.
This last issue of NEHSXpress for the academic year focuses on the following: a reminder of what must be done if a new Chapter Advisor will be leading NEHS next year; a request to submit your Annual Report through Survey Monkey if not already completed; announcements of the recipients of the Junior Summer Study Awards and the Outstanding Advisor Award; Classroom Library Grants; and a request to recommend Common Reader texts for 2019-2020. As we conclude this school year, we approach 1,100 NEHS chapters! Amazing, indeed!
At the end of each school year, some NEHS Chapter Advisors retire or find it necessary to shift the responsibilities of NEHS leadership to other faculty members. If that is the case for your chapter, please remember to make the changes to a new Chapter Advisor within NEHS Connect. All communication is sent to the Lead Advisor of record; your help in making the required changes will expedite the efficient delivery of NEHS news. Additionally, be sure to enter the names of any students inducted this spring. If you have questions about your membership lists, please contact Karen Larsen at email@example.com.
Over the past several weeks, special emails have been sent to all Lead Advisors with instructions for completing the required Chapter Annual Report; to date, 390 surveys have been completed. All chapters finishing the survey by June 15 will be entered for a drawing of $100. If that deadline is not feasible, we still ask that reports be submitted no later than June 29, 2018. We will be compiling data over the summer that will guide our work in the coming year. Please remember that submitting an Annual Report is a requirement of all chapters. The link for submission via Survey Monkey appears in your special email; the annual report is NOT accessible from the NEHS webpage.
NEHS has awarded grants in the amount of $750 to two junior members of NEHS for study this summer. The recipients are:
These young scholars will be writing articles for the NEHS Museletter at the beginning of the new school year, sharing their experiences.
NEHS will award up to five grants of $400 each per year to help members who have been NEHS classroom teachers for five years or fewer. That is, applicants may or may not be recent college graduates; the Classroom Library Grant is intended to help new teachers, whether in their first years out of college or in the first years of a second career, to build a classroom library for their students.
Our sponsoring organization, Sigma Tau Delta, also offers library grants; since both use Award Spring as the application platform, if you apply for a grant, the link you will use from the NEHS website will take you to the Sigma Tau Delta Award Spring page, which is as intended.
The deadline for applications is June 18. Awards will be made by July 15, with funds available immediately.
Congratulations to Shannon Burgess, NEHS Advisor at International Connections Academy, who has been selected as the recipient of this year's award. Shannon's letters of recommendation present a picture of a highly organized, outstanding English teacher, leader, colleague, mentor, and friend. One colleague stated, "Ms. Burgess provides a collaborative atmosphere for her students to thrive and grow. Her excitement for literature and writing is infectious, and she is always on the lookout for students in our school to share in that passion for the English Language Arts." Even though Shannon works in a virtual environment, she is able to motivate her students to tackle literacy projects and initiatives, giving them a real sense of community engagement and developing their leadership skills. As more and more virtual schools enter the educational landscape, we need to learn from leaders like Shannon who are pioneers in educational change. Congratulations, Shannon!
While the Common Readers have been selected for the coming school year, we would like to begin the process of gathering recommendations for the following year now. As you take time to read new texts over the summer, or you talk with students informally about their reading, please keep the NEHS Common Reader scholarship program in mind. As you fall in love with intriguing and thought-provoking texts, please send those titles (noting authors' names) to NEHS Director Dave Wendelin.
Once a list is generated by fall, we will develop and distribute a survey for advisors to help us narrow the list before a selection is made.
