May has arrived and excitement builds as graduations approach, final decisions about higher education destinations are made, and the school year comes to a close. As these transitions take place, many grow nostalgic over the closure these events signal—moving away from the familiarity of places, people, and events to the unknown. Yet, this is the nature of growth, particularly for those of us entrusted with education, as we watch our students test their "wings" and move away from us to new horizons.

We trust this has been a rewarding year of teaching and learning for all and particularly fulfilling as you, as an NEHS Advisor, have interacted with your NEHS members; our best wishes go with the seniors as they leave this phase of their academic lives and begin to pursue their university, college, and career paths. With higher education in the future for most, we encourage graduating NEHS members to investigate membership in Sigma Tau Delta (four-year university level) or Sigma Kappa Delta (two-year community college level), our partner honor societies, at the appropriate time.

Among the tasks that mark the end for this academic year are the responsibilities of NEHS chapter officers and Advisors to finalize the work of the Society before leaving for summer activities, including completing the Chapter Annual Report. This issue of the NEHSXpress includes: an announcement about the NEHS Scholarship winners, a reminder about the NEHS Annual Reports, the selection of the Common Readers for 2018-2019, NEHS Connect reminders, information about accessing NEHS information, and graduation merchandise timelines. Please send comments, suggestions, and/or news about your chapter activities to NEHS Director, Dave Wendelin.

Scholarship Recipients

In early April, applicants for both the Merit and Need-Based Scholarships were notified of the results. NEHS is proud to have provided $41,500 in Merit Scholarships and $10,000 in Need-Based scholarships to thirty-one (31) applicants this school year. We anticipate being able to increase the number of scholarships available next year as the Society continues to grow.

2017-2018 Merit-Scholarship Recipients

NEHS Connect

If there will be changes to the Lead Advisor for the next school year, please make sure to amend the information in NEHS Connect so correspondence is sent to the correct individual. We continue to work to improve the system to make it efficient and useful for all chapters. During the summer months, continued efforts will be made to move NEHS forward toward a new membership system that will eventually reduce the amount of work Advisors need to do to register their new inductees.

Keep in mind that the NEHS Constitution requires each chapter to pay chapter annual affiliation fees AND to induct at least one new member each year to remain active! Chapters that are in arrears must pay past fees before enrolling new members. Chapters that have not paid fees are considered inactive, making members and chapters ineligible for awards, grants, or scholarships.

Other helpful hints for NEHS Connect:

  1. for prompt and accurate recording, please include a copy of the invoice if paying the affiliation fee by check;
  2. by completing the payment portion of the transaction, printing the invoice should be suitable for most financial offices; and
  3. an invoice may be obtained through the "transaction history" section of NEHS Connect.

We have a unique email address for Advisors to pose any questions: nehsconnect@niu.edu should be used for that purpose.

NEHS Chapter Annual Reports

All NEHS Chapter Advisors are required to complete a Chapter Annual Report detailing activities conducted throughout the previous school year. We encourage chapters to make this a joint effort of the Advisor and the outgoing/incoming student officers. The report serves as a great way to review accomplishments as well as to begin planning for the following year.

THE REPORT IS NOT ACCESSED VIA THE NEHS WEBSITE. The reports are done electronically via Survey Monkey. On April 18, 2018, all Lead Advisors were sent a SEPARATE EMAIL that includes a unique link for the Report and a reminder was sent today. If you have not received that email or if it may have been filtered by school district computer systems, please contact the Central Office for assistance. As an incentive, all chapters completing the survey by June 15 will be entered into a drawing for $100. The final date for submission of the survey this year is June 30, 2018.

Common Readers Selected for 2018-19

The NEHS Advisory Council will experiment with a new approach to The Common Reader for the upcoming school year. Well-established reading research guides educators to, at times, give students choice for independent reading. In that vein, we will offer two Common Readers for the coming year; applicants will select the one text they are most interested in analyzing.

The two novels for the coming year are Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng or The Samauri's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama. The novels will be used for the Merit scholarship process for the upcoming year; any senior student who plans to submit a scholarship application to compete for NEHS scholarships must read either of these texts and respond to prompts and other application questions. Scholarship applications will be due Wednesday, January 16, 2019.

NEHS Merchandise

All merchandise items are now available through the NEHS Connect Store and must be ordered using that system. Simply navigate to your chapter information page; there, you will find a link to the Chapter Store where you will be able to order merchandise using a credit card or indicating a check will be sent. Please make sure to verify the mailing address for your school; because we now use UPS for shipping, PO Box addresses must be changed to street addresses. UPS will send the Lead Chapter Advisor a tracking number via email.

Graduation is just around the corner. Please do not delay in ordering graduation cords or medallions for your senior members as well as other items that would be appropriate for induction ceremonies. Rush orders are not accepted. Allow up to 3 weeks for order processing and shipping.
