Dear NEHS Colleagues, Student Members, and Friends of the Society:
Much has transpired in the last few weeks to cause fear, frustration, anger, and pain. The tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has riveted our attention, but what has become clear this time is that students are rallying for change. Regardless of our personal stance about school safety, the Second Amendment, and potential solutions, leadership for change is emerging from the young survivors. Their eloquent, passionate voices, echoed by many around the country, are a beacon of hope in these dark times.
As stories of heroism emerge, we are witnessing what we all know—educators are heroic, sometimes in the face of horrible violence, but more normally as they work quietly with learners, sharing their knowledge, love, and compassion. The NEHS Motto—"Gelast Sceal Mid Are"—"Duty Goes with Honor"—is a good reminder for us at this time. We are honored to work as educators; we take seriously our duty to serve and sacrifice; we teach our students hard work reaps reward; we know leadership brings change. As students and educators vigorously engage in civil discourse and perhaps civil disobedience in the coming months, it would not be a surprise to see NEHS members at the forefront, articulating, demanding, the need for action. We grieve for our colleagues and the students at M.S. Douglas High School. How are your chapters responding? What actions are your members willing to take to make a difference in society and, in that way, supporting those in Parkland? Let us know—we would be proud to highlight your efforts, demonstrating the impact of NEHS.

The staff members of NEHS and Sigma Tau Delta will be traveling to Cincinnati, OH, for the International Convention of Sigma Tau Delta in late March. There, the NEHS Advisory Council members in attendance will work to finalize scholarship awards, discuss Common Reader recommendations for 2018-2019, make recommendations for the budget development for next year, and share ideas for new initiatives that will be forthcoming as our organization grows. While in Cincinnati, NEHS leaders will give a grant of $2,500 to the Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati, supporting their efforts in the local community to improve literacy for all ages. Special March dates: Read Across America Day is March 2; World Storytelling Day is March 20; and World Poetry Day is March 21.

Much has come to light in recent days about the life of Marjory Stoneman Douglas for whom the school in Parkland, FL, is named. A graduate of Wellesley College in 1912, Douglas became an activist in Florida, working on the women's suffrage movement and in 1947 published The Everglades: River of Grass, changing the perception of the Everglades as a significant environmental treasure. Her work has been compared to that of Rachel Carson. One can imagine how proud she would be of the students from her namesake high school advocating so brilliantly for change.
The Marjory Stoneman Douglas NEHS chapter was chartered in 2005, one of the earliest for NEHS. The current Advisor is Donna Amelkin, who has led the EagLit Chapter since 2010.
The John L. Manear Outstanding Advisor Award is presented annually to one Advisor who has given generously of time, talent, creativity, and leadership to a local NEHS chapter. The award recognizes Advisors who foster the spirit of academic excellence and community service in their work with chapter members. The recipient of the John L. Manear Outstanding Advisor Award will receive a $500 check from NEHS and a plaque. Two additional awards of $250 may be awarded to recognize the contributions of other nominees. Nominations are due April 2, 2018.
It is not too early for current junior members of NEHS to begin planning to apply for a Summer Study Award. These $750 awards support students who have been accepted to and will be attending an academic study program taking place during summer of 2018. Interested students may apply for this award April 2-30 through AwardSpring.
Graduation is just around the corner. Don't delay in ordering graduation cords or medallions for senior NEHS members. Other merchandise is also available, including NEHS patches to be affixed to letter jackets and other school attire and NEHS stickers to be placed on transcripts.
Please note: We have a dwindling supply of NEHS patches; once the remaining patches are sold, this item will be discontinued.
We urge chapters to consider designing a project to make a community impact next fall. Project Grants for up to $200 to support local chapter activities meeting the NEHS mission are available each semester. We always have more money in the budget line for grants than is requested, so the odds your project will be approved are great! Applications for grants are due by May 7 to be utilized during the first semester of 2018-2019 school year.
