Celebrating Shakespeare's Birthday. As annual reports were submitted, many chapters took the opportunity to describe in some detail their most noteworthy 2010-2011 activity. Because other chapters have asked for an expanded list of potential projects in addition to the ones already listed on the Field Trips, Fundraising, and Service Projects NEHS web pages, we have created this page to support all chapters. The list will be organized by month; as each  NEHSXpress is sent out, new ideas will appear on this page for reference.

November 2011:

  • Students established a partnership with a local grammar school, tutoring students 5th-8th grade ever Monday afternoon. The program continues to grow and we are hoping to add two additional grammar schools in the upcoming year. Don Bosco Preparatory High School, Ramsey, NJ

  • I believe that this year's biggest contribution was reading to children at a local school in order to foster a love for reading at an early age. Geneva High School, Geneva, IL

  • Since our school has a large, primarily Latin immigrant population, we utilized Enrique's Journey as a starter for our "Immigrant Project"—a series of essays, poems, biographical pieces, and fictional stories about the immigrant experience. Mother Cabrini High School, New York, NY

  • The Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart National English Honor Society members each created a page for an alphabet and a number book, which were later bound and sent to children in a sister school in Uganda. Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart, Miami, FL

  • This year we hosted our second annual book sale at Barnes and Noble. This gave our students an opportunity to buy their summer reading books along with any other book they wished to purchase. Archbishop Coleman Carroll High School, Miami, FL

  • Our chapter participated in an adult literacy program in downtown Atlanta. Our project involved buying dictionaries as well as one and two inch 3 ring binders for a community of immigrants enrolled in an English class. Blessed Trinity Catholic High School, Rosewell, GA

  • The holiday book drive was extremely successful. We gathered books for children and women in local shelters. Alpharetta High School, Alpharetta, GA

  • The activity that had the most impact was a "reading night" at our local pizza parlor. All elementary students in attendance were read to and got to pick a brand new book to take home. The pizza parlor gave incentive coupons to the elementary schools for honor roll, perfect attendance, most improved, and outstanding student awards. Ysleta High School, El Paso, TX

  • This year the chapter organized and coordinated a three week-long literary festival in May that included teacher and community workshops outside of the normal curriculum. McIntosh High School, Peachtree City, GA

  • We offer free before and after school tutoring that we have combined with all other honor societies (math, science, National) so that there are more people available to offer assistance. Loch Raven High School, Baltimore, MD

  • Participating in Read for the Record at our district's elementary school We had over 100 children reading the same book on the same date to add toward the world record. Whitehall Jr./Sr. High School, Whitehall, NY
